Destin Fishing Museum
January 28, 2015Sometimes, great things come in small packages. That is the case with the Destin Fishing Museum. It may not be the largest museum on the Emerald Coast, but it is one of the best. It contains a lot of information in a small building, making it the place to go if you want to learn about the history of Destin.
About the Destin Fishing Museum
The Destin Fishing Museum has various exhibits that will take you through the history of Destin. You will go back in time and see what Destin was like long before it was a tourist destination. Exhibits include a collection of antique rods and reels. This concludes a rod that is constructed of split bamboo that is attached to a Penn Reel. This particular rod and reel belonged to Ernest Hemingway.
You will also get to see The Primrose when you visit the Destin Fishing Museum. The Primrose was built in 1925 and is the oldest seine boat that is still around today. That alone is worth a trip to the museum.
In addition, you can look through old photographs of boat captains, boats, businesses, and early settlers. You can even look through exhibits that detail what life was like before electricity came to Destin.
On the Grounds
When you visit the Destin Fishing Museum, you can also stop by the original Destin Post Office. The building is located adjacent to the property, so be sure to stop by and see it.
Hours and Admission
The Destin Fishing Museum is open from 10 AM until 4 PM on Tuesday through Saturday. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for seniors and military. Children aged 7 through college get in for $3 while children 6 and under get in for free.
